Setup
Set up a Hootling
A Hootling is a child profile inside the parent account. Each Hootling has separate reading progress, quiz progress, badges, country interests, and PIN.
- Create or sign in to the parent account.
- Add a Hootling with the child's name or nickname.
- Enter the child's age so the app can choose a suitable reading level.
- Choose countries of interest for extra local stories.
- Set a PIN so the child can enter their own Hootling profile.
You can have more than one Hootling under the same parent account. This keeps siblings' progress separate
Country Choices
Choose countries for local stories
- Open the Hootling profile.
- Choose up to three countries of interest.
- Save the selection.
Global news is always included. Country choices add local stories from selected places when suitable stories are available.
If a country has fewer child-suitable stories on a particular day, the app may show fewer items rather than fill the screen with weak stories.
Choose News
Switch between story sections
- Tap the category label on the home screen. By default, it appears as World News / Globe.
- Choose News opens from that category area.
- Select World, Sports, Health, Tech, Science, Entertainment, or All News.
All News gives the widest view across available categories and selected countries. The selected section is remembered for the active Hootling.
Reading News
Read age-aware stories
Daily Hoots prepares different reading versions of the same story for different ages. Younger readers get simpler wording, while older readers get more context.
- Choose a story from the home screen or a category section.
- Read the short story version shown for the active Hootling.
- Use quizzes after reading a few stories to reinforce understanding.
The aim is calm, clear explanation of real events, not long articles or adult-style news
Catch-Up
Find unread stories
Catch-Up shows stories the active Hootling has not read yet. It is a quick way to find missed stories without searching through every section.
What Catch-Up does not show
It is not a badge history, quiz history, or general notification archive
Quiz And Progress
When to use quizzes and progress
Quiz
Quizzes are based on recent Daily Hoots stories. They work best after a child has read a few stories
Badges
Badges reward reading and quiz effort over time. Badge celebrations may appear when a new badge is earned
Progress
Progress shows reading activity, quiz effort, and badges for the active Hootling
Daily Timing
When new stories appear
Daily Hoots usually prepares fresh stories in the morning for each supported country. Global stories are refreshed separately during the day.
- Open the app after the morning news refresh.
- Check the home screen, chosen category, or All News.
- If fewer stories appear, it usually means fewer suitable stories passed the checks that day.
The app prefers fewer useful stories over filling the screen with weak or unsuitable items
Safety And Help
Good to know
No chat or posting
Children cannot chat, post content, contact strangers, or use social networking features inside Daily Hoots.
PINs keep profiles separate
PINs help children enter their own Hootling profile. Parents can manage Hootlings from the parent account.
